Instructions
- Have someone drive you home after surgery and help you at home for 1-2 days
- You should use cold compresses for comfort and to help decrease the swelling
- Follow a soft balanced diet. You may return your diet to normal as tolerated after 3 days
- Decreased activity may promote constipation, so you may want to add more raw fruit to your diet, and be sure to increase fluid intake
- Take pain medication as prescribed. Do not take aspirin or any products containing aspirin
- Alcohol and pain medications interact, therefore do not drink alcohol when taking pain or prescribed medication
- Do not smoke, as smoking delays healing and increases the risk of complications
Activities
- Start walking as soon as possible, this helps to reduce swelling and lowers the chance of blood clots
- Get plenty of rest, you will tire easily, plan on taking it easy for the first week
- Do not drive until you are no longer taking any pain medications and you can do it comfortably
- Return to work in about 1 week
- Avoid any activity that could jar or bump your face for at least 6 weeks
Wound Care
- Internal incisions inside the mouth need attention at least 4 times per day with a mouthwash such as Listerine or Salty Water
- External Incisions
- Leave dressing intact until reviewed in rooms by Registered Nurse
- After review clean twice per day with Normal Saline and apply Vaseline or Antibiotic ointment, if prescribed
Expectations
- A dressing will be applied over the implant to minimize discomfort and swelling
- Ability to move your mouth and lips may be diminished temporarily and this may last several weeks. This is due to the muscles being elevated off the facial bone during surgery and waiting for them to re-attach
- Fuller, more balanced look.
- Normal appearance in 2-4 weeks
